It is a senior yoga training in Nepal built around chair yoga, gentle floor practice, breath work, meditation, relaxation and safe class planning. What Makes Our Senior Yoga Training Unique?
Most yoga teacher courses teach seniors in one short chapter. Here, the whole senior yoga training is about older adults.
Our founder, Dr. Prakash Acharya, designed a style of practice for seniors, which we teach at our seniors retreat. It blends gentle yoga, breath work, meditation, relaxation and simple lifestyle advice. This course passes that experience on to you.
You will learn from experienced teachers specializing in yoga alignment, therapy, anatomy, healthy lifestyle, and meditation. This multidisciplinary approach helps you understand each student’s needs from different perspectives and equips you with the knowledge to provide safe, personalized, and holistic yoga guidance. Finally, we teach by doing. You practice chair yoga yourself, then you teach it, and then you get kind feedback. This is how new teachers grow in confidence

Why Yoga for Older Adults Needs Trained Teachers
Older adults are one of the fastest growing groups of yoga students. They come for calm, movement and company, and they deserve classes made for them.
A teacher who has not trained for this may push too hard, speak too fast or skip basic safety steps. A teacher with proper yoga for older adults training does the opposite. They slow down, offer choices and keep the room kind and relaxed.
Yoga for elderly people also has a social side. A weekly class gives students a reason to leave home, meet friends and feel part of a group. As a teacher, you help build that.
This is why our course puts so much weight on safe teaching, and not only on poses.

100-Hour Senior Yoga Teacher Training Curriculum
The course has six parts. Each one builds on the one before it.
| Module | What you study |
| Chair and adaptive yoga | Chair poses, props, wall support and easy ways to move between chair and mat |
| Gentle asana practice | Joint warm-ups, standing and seated poses, and slow flows |
| Alignment, mobility and balance | How the older body moves, common limits and fall-safe practice |
| Pranayama and meditation | Gentle breath work, meditation methods and mantra chanting |
| Relaxation and Yoga Nidra | Guided rest for body and mind |
| Teaching skills and sequencing | Class planning, clear cues, safety checks and practice teaching |
Philosophy and lifestyle also run through the course. We look at the eight limbs of yoga, simple daily habits and the way yoga fits into later life. The balance between modules can change from one batch to the next.
Everything is taught step by step, so even a first-time student can follow. You practice each skill on your own body first, and then learn how to teach it.
Chair Yoga and Adaptive Yoga Techniques for Older Adults
Why Chair Yoga Matters
Not every student can sit on the floor, and many do not need to. A chair gives support, safety and confidence.
Chair yoga is also a good doorway for people who feel shy or unfit. They can start seated, feel success and move on step by step.

Chair Poses You Will Practice
You learn poses such as these, along with ways to scale each one up or down:
- Chair cat and cow stretch
- Chair raised hands
- Chair extended side angle
- Chair eagle
- Chair warrior and reverse warrior
- Chair pigeon
- Chair Surya Namaskara, a gentle form of sun salutation
Adaptive Yoga and Props
Adaptive yoga means changing the pose to fit the person. You learn to use chairs, blocks, straps, bolsters, blankets and the wall.
A student with stiff shoulders may hold a strap. A student with weak knees may sit for a pose that others do standing. Both are doing yoga well.
Setting Up a Chair Class
A chair class needs good set-up. You learn to choose a firm, stable chair without wheels and to place it on a non-slip floor or against a wall.
You also learn how to guide a student to sit tall on the front half of the seat, with feet flat on the floor. These small details make chair yoga safe and comfortable.
Micro Exercises and Joint Warm-Ups
Sukshma Vyayam means small, gentle exercises for the wrists, ankles, neck, shoulders and other joints. They wake up the body without strain, so they are a perfect start for older students.

Senior Yoga Alignment, Mobility, Balance and Safety
The Aging Body in Plain Words
With age, many people notice stiffer joints, less muscle strength and slower balance. Others live with arthritis, high blood pressure, diabetes or weak bones.
We teach you what this means for a yoga class. You learn which movements are usually friendly, which need care and when to ask a student to check with a doctor.
Mobility and Joint-Friendly Movement
Gentle, regular movement keeps joints active. You learn slow, smooth transitions, short holds and rest between poses.
A good rule is to hold a pose for about 10 to 15 seconds and repeat it two or three times. Yoga should never hurt, and we teach you to release a stretch that causes pain.
Balance and Fall Safety
Balance work is a key part of a senior class, and it must be safe. You practice standing poses beside a wall or behind a chair, with a clear space around the student.
You also learn simple tools, such as a fixed gaze point and a wide stance, that make balance easier.

Common Conditions and Simple Teaching Choices
| Common concern | Simple teaching choice |
| Stiff or sore joints | Slow, small movements and plenty of rest |
| Weak bones | Avoid deep forward bends and strong twists, and use support |
| High blood pressure | Keep the head above the heart, and avoid fast or forceful breathing |
| Poor balance | Use a wall or chair for every standing pose |
| Low energy or tiredness | Keep the class short, and add more rest |
These are general teaching choices, not medical advice. A student with a health condition should always follow their doctor.
Safety Checks Before and During Class
- Ask about health conditions, medicines, injuries and recent surgery before the first class
- Offer chair or wall options in every pose
- Watch for dizziness, shortness of breath and pain
- Keep the class slow, and never push a student past comfort
- Know when to refer a student to a doctor or a trained yoga therapist
This course gives teaching skills, not medical advice. A teacher should always work within the limits of their training.
Pranayama, Meditation and Relaxation for Seniors
Gentle Breath Work
Pranayama, the yogic science of breath, plays an important role in supporting relaxation, mental clarity, and overall well-being in older adults. In our Senior Yoga Teacher Training Course, you will learn how to guide seniors through gentle, accessible breathing techniques, beginning with diaphragmatic (belly) breathing and slow, comfortable breathing patterns.
You will also explore alternate nostril breathing (Nadi Shodhana), humming bee breath (Bhramari), and gentle Ujjayi breathing, understanding their traditional benefits, practical applications, and appropriate modifications. Special attention is given to age-related needs and health conditions, including high blood pressure and heart concerns.
You will learn when to adapt or avoid certain techniques like forceful breathing and prolonged breath retention.

Meditation for Older Adults
Meditation offers older adults a gentle way to cultivate inner peace, improve attention, manage stress, and develop a deeper connection with themselves. In our Senior Yoga Teacher Training Course, you will learn practical meditation techniques tailored to the needs and comfort of older practitioners, including breath awareness, mindfulness, So-Ham meditation, Here-and-Now meditation, guided meditation, and chakra meditation.
You will explore how to introduce these practices in simple, accessible ways, using comfortable seated or supported positions and gentle guidance. Special emphasis is placed on patience, emotional well-being, and individual needs, helping seniors develop greater self-awareness, mental clarity, and a sense of connection. These skills will prepare you to guide older adults toward greater calm, confidence, and well-being through meditation.
New to the subject? Our introduction to meditation page explains the basics. For deeper study, we also offer a seniors meditation and breathing training.
Relaxation, Yoga Nidra, and Chanting
Relaxation, Yoga Nidra, and chanting offer older adults a gentle way to release tension, quiet the mind, and cultivate a sense of inner peace. In our Senior Yoga Teacher Training Course, you will learn guided relaxation techniques, age-appropriate Yoga Nidra practices, and soothing mantra chanting to help seniors conclude each session feeling calm, comfortable, and refreshed. You will explore how to use body awareness, conscious breathing, visualization, and gentle sound practices to encourage deep relaxation and support emotional well-being. Special attention is given to comfortable positioning, individual needs, and accessible teaching methods, allowing you to create a peaceful and nurturing environment where older adults can rest, reconnect with themselves, and enjoy the benefits of mindful relaxation.
Many seniors sleep poorly or feel tense. You learn guided relaxation and ideas from Yoga Nidra to close a class in a peaceful way. Soft mantra chanting is also part of the day. Singing together lifts the mood, and it needs no special skill.
