According to Patanjali Yoga Sutra, there are three stages of Antaranga Sadhana (Internal Yoga) that is

  1. Dharana (concentration): Dharana is the concentration which generate through pointed awareness. Dharana is the state, where our mind is concentrated on one subject. It is said there is a wind of thought running in our mind. To give a direction to those scattered thoughts, we need dharana in our life. When we reach the perfection towards the practice of concentration, dhyana is achieved.
  2. Dhyana (Meditation):  Dhyana is contemplation with pure awareness. It is defined as effortless concentration. It is the first state of the meditation. Using meditation can achieve spiritual, mental, emotional success.
  3. Samadhi (Ultimate liberation from suffering): Samadhi is the blissful state of silence where just pure consciousness will be left. Samadhi is the final state and the ultimate goal of meditation. It is the silence state of mind where we become one with the true nature of self. It is the blissful state. As we are upset sometime without any reason, meditative mind is the state where the joy emerges from within. This is the true nature of the mind. Due to unnatural lifestyle and busy life, we tend to become more stressful and anxious. Meditation brings the balance and harmony in our life.

Introduction of pranayama

Prana is regarded as the vital force of life. Ayama is the extension. Thus, the extension (ayama) of the prana (life-energy) is known as pranayama. Pranayama is not just the practice of controlling breathe. But by being able to control our breath we are able to activate the energy channels. We are able to still our thoughts and emotions. Imagine a man trying to control a monkey. It is hard to control. The same is like when we try to control our mind.

That is why sometime when we sit for meditation, we find more difficulty in controlling our thoughts. Yogis at the ancient time developed a systematic technique that helps to still our mind. The still mind is the meditative mind.  So, pranayama is very beneficial not just for our brain and lungs but also for awakening our higher consciousness and preparing for our spiritual journey and you will learn the right way of doing pranayama in this pranayama and meditation training.
